Types of Multi Room Audio

Systems come in various different categories from a basic single source system to a multi-source system that can control your music, TV, lighting, heating and many more services throughout your home.

When choosing a multi-room audio system all you need do is decide what sources you want to listen to.

Commonly these include a CD and/or Music Server which can hold many hundreds of CDs digitally in original CD quality (not compressed MP3) and stream different tracks to each room simultaneously. Radio tuners can be added so that you can listen to your favourite station, whether DAB, FM or Internet radio, in any room. iPod® interfaces enable your family and guests to listen to their personal music collection without the restriction of earphones.

Access to audio from your satellite or digital TV system, or any other sources you desire, perhaps a turntable for playing your cherished LP collection, or even your piano to listen to the children practice while your prepare dinner in the kitchen are all possibilities. Once you have chosen your sources you simply decide in which rooms you wish to listen to the music, this will normally include living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms as well as perhaps the gym, pool and garden. It is possible to include garden rooms or summer houses located away from the main property in multi-room audio systems.

Multi-room solutions can be expanded to suit the number of rooms you wish to have the music available in and to use as many sources as you desire. The whole system can be controlled from either flush wall mounted controls, wireless handsets and iPods, iPhones & iPads. The more advanced systems are also able to display information about the sources such as album art and information about your favourite radio station.

In addition it is possible to add seamless control of intelligent lighting systems, temperature controls, curtains or blinds and multi-room video distribution systems. CCTV and access control systems, which allow you to see who is ringing the door bell and open the front door or gates remotely, can also be added.

Another great feature of multi-room systems in general is that room clutter and visible cabling is vastly reduced. This allows you more flexibility with your interior design, as you don’t need to house a Hi-Fi, etc in each room that you want to enjoy them.

streamingWhat exactly is Streaming?
Music streaming involves: 1. Music is converted (ripped) into computer data (digital data packets) & stored by the user on a server. Or supplied as digital data packets via the internet. 2. Then digital data packets are sent on demand from server to player (often called a streamer). 3. These digital data packets are then reassembled into digital audio data (rendering), usually within the streamer. 4. This digital audio data is then converted into an analogue audio signal by a DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter). 5. And finally the analogue audio signal is connected for playback via a normal amplifier & speakers.  more more

WE LOVE TO LISTENSo . . . what about Networks, Wireless, Internet Radio, UPnP? How do they fit into Streaming music?
Streaming can be delivered via many different carriers. So a server of digital data packets could stream across: 1. a digital cable (coax or optical) 2. a wired network (ethernet) 3. a wireless network (wireless router or other b, g, n device, Bluetooth, Cleer, etc) 4. a standard house mains supply (ethernet over mains).  more more

Oxford AudioAnd . . . how do I control & play my music?
Normally with: 1. a dedicated supplied remote control 2. a wireless remote device like an iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch 3. a laptop/PC/MAC. A normal CD player is a self contained device with it's own remote control (normally line of sight Infra-Red). A streamer/player can also have it's own remote control - plus because the music is often streamed over a home wired or wireless network - it can additionally be controlled by any device able to connect to that network. And because streaming can deal with multiple packets of digital data then more than one piece of music can be streamed simultaneously to different/multiple players and control devices.  more more
